André Previn conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra and Chorus in this
performance featuring three works by British composer William
Walton. Captured at London's Royal Festival Hall in 1982, the
concert includes Walton's Coronation March 'Orb and Sceptre',
Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in B Minor and 'Belshazzar's
Feast'. The soloists are violinist Kyung-Wha Chung and baritone
Thomas Allen.
A brand-new work full of wit and style from a major American
composer. Premiere performance was in 1999 with Nancy Goeres,
bassoonist, and the composer as pianist. Duration ca. 13 minutes.
The multi-talented Andre Previn composed this three-movement
concerto on commission from the Boston Symphony Orchestra for
violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter. The concerto was actually written
during the months before the marriage of Mutter and Previn. It was
premiered on March 14, 2002 at Symphony Hall, Boston. The
composer's feelings and admiration for Mutter and the BSO come
through in this expansively tuneful, warm music. The piece reflects
Previn's early childhood memories of Germany, incorporating a
German children's song in the third movement. Previn and Mutter
recorded the concerto for a CD released by Deutsche-Grammophon in
October, 2003. Duration: c. 38 minutes.
From the wonderful new American opera, A Streetcar Named Desire
(based on the unforgettable Tennessee Williams play). For soprano
and piano.
